Trustage auto insurance

So, your neighbor knows you are about to start shopping for auto insurance and she recommended TruStage because her mother-in-law works there. What do you do?

It may be embarrassing for you to say that you’ve never heard of them, you being the guy on the block who lives on Google 24/7 so you’ll sound like a genius.

No problem! We understand that there are tons of auto insurance companies out there and unless they have great or terrible TV commercials, most people will only recognize a handful of companies.

That’s where we come in. We have drilled down into TruStage Auto Insurance just so we can offer up this in-depth product review.

About TruStage Insurance

TruStage logo

To be clear, TruStage is not an Auto Insurance Company but rather a life insurer which is an arm of CUNA Mutual Group. CUNA is an insurance and financial product provider to thousands of credit unions across the country.

When an individual contacts TruStage about auto or homeowner’s insurance, they are referred to Liberty Mutual or Esurance who they have partnered with through CUNA. The credit union members will typically receive a substantial discount for buying their auto or homeowner’s insurance through their credit union.

Although TruStage is not underwriting the auto insurance policies that credit union members purchase, they consider themselves the first point of contact when they hand off a client to Liberty Mutual or Esurance and as such, they make certain that customers are treated outstandingly.

TruStage Financial Stability

Since the auto insurance policies are not actually sold or serviced by TruStage, it makes sense that we understand the financial stability of Liberty Mutual and Esurance, the companies that the insurance customer must rely upon for customer service and claims service.

Here are the ratings for Liberty Mutual and Esurance:

TruStage Auto Insurance

As was mentioned earlier, TruStage hands-off prospective auto insurance customers to Esurance (an Allstate Company) or Liberty Mutual. Both of these insurers provide auto insurance using the coverages on the Personal Auto Insurance form. Since the policy is offered as a package of coverages, insurance shoppers can pick and choose which coverages best meet their needs and budget.

Here are the coverages offered by Esurance and Liberty Mutual:

Bodily Injury LiabilityPays for injuries to other drivers or passengers in an at-fault accident subject to the limits in the policy.
Property Damage LiabilityPays for repairs or replacement of another person's vehicle or property during an at-fault accident subject to the limits of the policy.
Medical PaymentsMedical Payments covers medical expenses for you and other passengers in your vehicle in an accident no matter who's at fault. This coverage will even cover you for injuries sustained in another person's vehicle or as a pedestrian up to the limit in the policy.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)PIP covers the driver, all passengers, or a pedestrian involved in an accident no matter who's at fault. PIP helps pay for medical expenses, lost wages, loss of services, and funeral expenses up to the policy limits. This coverage is typically mandatory in "no-fault" states.
Uninsured/Underinsured MotoristUninsured/Underinsured motorist covers your medical expenses if the other driver (at-fault) is uninsured or underinsured. Some states also allow uninsured/underinsured property damage that covers your vehicle as well.
Comprehensive CoverageComprehensive coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle after a non-collision event such as fire, vandalism, theft, or acts of nature subject to your deductible.
Collision CoverageCollision coverage pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident that involves another vehicle or object subject to your deductible.
Emergency Roadside AssistanceRoadside assistance is available if you are locked out of your vehicle or required roadside assistance like a tire change or fuel for an empty tank. Your coverage for each event is subject to the limit you purchased on your policy.
Rental ReimbursementRental reimbursement helps pay for rental expenses if you are in an at-fault accident or
hit by an uninsured driver. Most policies will have a limit per-day and per-accident.

Depending on whether Esurance Auto Insurance or Liberty Auto Insurance best meets your needs, each insurance company also offers optional coverages that can be added to your policy.

The Difference between Esurance and Liberty Mutual

The primary difference between Esurance and Liberty Mutual is in their distribution methods. Liberty Mutual has local agents across the country who sell all of Liberty’s insurance products whereas with Esurance, even though they’re owned by Allstate, insurance shoppers must buy direct from the company online.

With auto insurance, most companies have similar basic rates for their coverages. However, it is the discounts they offer that can really separate one insurance company from another.

For the most part, Esurance and Liberty Mutual offer many of the same discounts but the availability could be affected by your state’s department of insurance. Both companies are offering a driver habit tracking device that records hard stops, accelerations, and quick turns which can save some serious money over the life of your policy.

TruStage Auto Insurance Discounts

Most auto insurance companies have very similar basic insurance rates. It is the discounts that can have a significant effect on how much you actually pay for your auto insurance. Since TruStage auto insurance applicants are referred to either Esurance or Liberty Mutual, we’ll do a side-by-side comparison of each company’s discounts.
